Veteran Dancer of Travancore Smt Indira Bhayi Thankachi passed away, she was 87.
Born into a family of the lineage of the great Irayimman Thampi and Veena expert Kuttykunji Thankachi,it was only natural for Indirabhai Thankachi to follow suit. The queen of grace is over 80’s ,yet so full of life.Strikingly beautiful,the slightest movement of her eyes betrays her passion for dance.She is Indirabai Thankachi the Great Grand Daughter of Irayimman Thampi and the Last Palace Dancer.
She was born to M.L.Ponnamma Thankachy the first person to open music school in kerala and the school named Swathithirunal music school at Poojappura at Trivandrum and well known to old generation people.Her father named Narasimhan Thampi who was very fond of music who encourage her to become a very well known artist to this generation too.The main power behind her was her father that she continued her dance even after her marriage also.By now, she is a well known dancer and run a music school known as Meenakshi Bharatha Nattiya Academy for all age groups,with all support of her family members.
She was active in dance stages during 1960 – 70s. She was the senior disciple of Panthalloor Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. Aswathi Thirunal Thampuratty and Pooyam Thirunal Thampyratty were stuednts of Smt Thankachi. The ancestral home of Irayimman Thampi was built in 18th century now owned by fourth generation heirs, Indirabai and her husband Jayapalan Nair was staying at West fort Trivandrum waving the old glory and pride.
Cremation of Smt Indira Bhayi Thankachi will take place at Thycaud Shanthikavadam , today at 9.30 am.
