Ramyani Roy – a unique Kathakali Exponent from Kolkata
Ramyani Roy started dancing at a very tender age of four years under the supreme guidance of Smt. Mamta Shankar, renowned actress choreographer. Her natural inclination towards dance gave her the direction to nurture in the field of creative dance.
Alongside creative dance she started taking lessons in Indian Classical dance like Kathakali and Bharatnatyam under the guidance of rewound Guru Sri Kalamandalam V.R.Venkitt and Smt.Preetha Venkitt. This acted as a perfect motivation for her to take up dance as a subject of study at the university level and after completing her graduation from Calcutta University she did her masters in kathakali dance from Rabindra Bharati University with 1st class in the year of2007.
She has received Junior Research Fellowship in the field of Kathakali Dance from Ministry of Culture and Tourism Govt.of India and also qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) Examination conducted by U.G.C. GOVT. of INDIA. Presently doing PhD on kathakali dance from Rabindra Bharati University.
She has performed in various prestigious festivals along with her Guru’s troup. Also performed Kathakali (Krishna vesham) solo at “Stars of Tomorrow” conducted by West Bengal Dance Group Federation and Uday Shankar Dance Festival both in the year of 2008.Performed solo in “Mayol” Dance Festival organized by Manipuri Nartanalaya in 2009 and also choreographed and performed at dance drama “Anandadhwani” for Rabindra Samaroha conducted by Manipuri Nartanalaya in 2011.Performed at Cuttack Mahotsav in 2010. Organized by Utkal Yuva Sanskrutik Sangh and received Nritya Mani award and a huge press appreciation.She has also performed in Rabindra Janmotsav at India International Centre, New Delhi supported by Ministry of Culture govt. of India & ICCR in 2011 and performed at Rudra Dhara Festival at Rourkella Orissa in 2012.Recently performed at Nupur Baje Jai Festival in Dhaka(2013),Rukmini Devi Dance Festival,Jhulan Utsav etc.
