Pt. Krishan Mohan Maharaj – a renowned Guru in Kathak

asg_056Pt. Krishan Mohan Maharaj, who is the 7th generation in a family of great galaxy of kathak heroes, is the eldest son of Padmashri  Pt. Shambhu Maharaj. He belongs to the illustrious Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow. In his own life, Pt. Krishan Mohan Maharaj has served the ancient Kathak tradition for more than 50 years, starting to perform alongside his father from a tender age of 8 years. He received rigorous training in kathak from his father since his childhood. After the untimely demise of his father, at 16 years of age, Pt. Krishan Mohan Maharaj continued his training with his cousin brother, World renowned Padmavibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj.

He has received many a prestigious and coveted awards for his decades of dedication towards Indian Performing arts, recently he is honored as a title of  Nritya Ratan by Prayag Sangeet Samiti, (Allahabad). His dance skills have received much acclaim on international stages in Abu Dhabi, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Dubai, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jeddah, Korea, Russia, Syria, the USA and the UK. Presently he is a senior kathak Guru (Teacher)  of National Institute of Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, and has trained numerous students to achieve prominence in Kathak at National and International levels.

Pandit ji is regarded as the torch bearer of an ancient tradition of kathak and its great lineage. His dance bears all the hallmarks of an extremely talented artist, with a style that shows a special command over Layakari and Tayyari. His breathtaking Pirouettes and scintillating footwork have always appealed to both audience and critics. Pandit ji is also adept in playing instruments like Tabla, Pakhawaj, Drums, and the Dholak.
