Mandolin Maestro Shri U.Srinivas passes away, he was 45.
Carnatic music great and a pioneer in the use of the mandolin in Indian classical music, U Srinivas who was also known as ‘Mandolin Srinivas’ passed away at the age of 45 in a Chennai hospital. Sources at Apollo Hospital hospital, where the musician was admitted few days ago, said he died at 10 am today.The cause of his death was not immediately known though reports suggested he had undergone a liver transplant after which his condition had deteriorated.
The 45-year-old musician had undergone a liver transplant and had been recovering well, the sources said. “However last night he developed some complications and passed away in the morning,” they said.
Srinivas was the first person to use mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch and raga. He is said to have found the instrument in a studio where his father was employed. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2010.
